While in Salem, Massachusetts, a tarot deck stood out on the shelves. The tarot deck was full of engraving-style designs by the artist Tomás Hijo. The deck’s images are based on characters and scenes from Guillermo del Toro’s films, cool, but I mostly liked the art of the cards.
Though it lives on the desk at arm’s length, reading tarot is not a frequent practice. It would be nice, but most days I don’t need to know anything about anything going on and will keep on truckin’.
I had been sitting on the artwork for beaming and I wanted to write something for it. The picture is a processed photo of a street at night from the perspective of the bike rider. I started writing, but ultimately everything felt so forced and kind of whatever. I decided to go to cards and have them prompt me to figure out what wanted to be written.
I pulled the Queen of Wands inverted first. I knew that meant movement forward, but to what? I pulled another and it was a Five of Cups. Hmm, well I guess that helps explain the feeling of moving forward, missing opportunities on the periphery, but still at least one cup stands. What came out:
“By the time the periphery has been processed, an unmeasured distance becomes an unanswerable choice.”
All this to say, stuck? Try tarot.
